ClariS is a musical unit consisting of two singers, Alice and Clara. They are most well-known for their first major debut song “irony”, which was used as the opening theme to the anime adaptation of Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai ClariS is also notable in that both members of the unit are still middle school students and also that Alice and Clara never show their faces, instead being represented by illustrations from various artists such as redjuice, Aoki Ume, and Kanzaki Hiro. According to theirofficial bio, ClariS means “bright, clean, and brilliant” in Latin, and Alice and Clara’s old website also reveals some other interesting facts – Alice’s hobby is dancing, her special ability is swimming, and her favourite subject is English, while Clara’s special ability is playing the piano, her favourite subject is music, and if she was stranded on a deserted island, she would choose to bring her cell phone.

Before making their major debut as ClariS, Alice and Clara posted covers of songs under the unit name of Alice☆Clara (ｱﾘｽ☆ｸﾗﾗ) on niconico. Their most popular cover is of “only my railgun”, which has more than 1,400 Mylists as of this post. However, the majority of their works are not niconico chart-toppers at all, with many of their submissions gathering under 200 Mylists. Despite this, Alice and Clara caught the eye of the staff at anime music magazine LisAni! and were chosen to be the vocalists of two exclusive original songs, Drop and Kimi no Yume wo Miyou Both songs were composed by kz (livetune) with illustrations from redjuice.

ClariS’s sound reflects the meaning of their unit name quite well – both Alice and Clara consistently sing in bright and clear voices. Although their voices are admittedly not very unique, they fit in very well with the pop genre, and to sum up ClariS’s current works, their songs are comfortable and easy to listen to. Despite being in the “musical comfort zone” for now, one of ClariS’s most attractive characteristics right now is their potential, as kz of livetune observed.

Details about supercell's 2nd single "Sayonara Memories", to be released on February 10th, 2010.

This is a translation (and more) for the Oricon Style article that disclosed further details of the single.

Jacket picture for supercell's "Sayonara Memories", to be released on February 10th. (Illust: redjuice)

Article title: supercell, a big favourite for 2010′s sakura/graduation song!

Article translation: Suddenly debuting at 4th in the charts with their first album “supercell” on March 1st, 2009, doing it again with their first single “Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari” in August, and making it certain that they had made a vivid debut from the internet scene to the major commercial scene, supercell is a creator group headed by ryo. After “Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari” first appeared on the charts at 5th, it had continued to be in the Top 20 for 6 weeks, and with long sales, it is now a hit with over 80,000 copies sold.

A 2nd single from supercell, to be released on Feb 10th and titled “Sayonara Memories”, has arrived. Along with composer ryo’s immensely heartrending lyrics and an impressionable melody, the vocals are will again be by nagi from the group’s previous work. ryo brilliantly shows his depiction of the anxious, bittersweet world view that is characteristic of adolescence. Also, the music video will be by MIKI Takahiro, who will make his debut in the coming spring as a film producer with the notable movie “SORANIN” (Starring MIYAZAKI Aoi), and will utilize a projector to feature fantasy-type content, making this a video a subject to be taken note of.

As the jacket and artist picture was illustrated by supercell member and noteworthy illustrator redjuice, the jacket has gathered as much attention as the music itself.

With “Sayonara Memories” having a big hold on being 2010′s huge sakura/graduation song favourite, the formerly internet-based, attention-garnering creator group supercell looks like they would again be of great acclaim in 2010.

Artist picture drawn by illustrator redjuice.

Description: Although it’s to be released on February 10th, preorders for both the regular and limited editions of the single have already started at various online retailers such as amazon.co.jp and cdjapan. The regular edition is retailing at 1,233 Yen while the limited edition, which includes a Region 2 DVD with music video, is priced at 1,575 Yen (1,338Y at Amazon.co.jp). The CD’s tracklist, from amazon.co.jp, is as follows:

(Sayonara Memories/Farewell, Memories)
(Oshiete Ageru/I’ll tell you)
(Yakusoku wo Shiyou/Let’s Promise)
Instrumental-
Instrumental-

Further according to amazon.co.jp, the total time of the CD amounts to 25 minutes. In addition to having three wholly new songs on the single, the other noteworthy aspect of this would be redjuice’s illustrations, which were drawn in a style quite uncharacteristic of the illustrator’s regularly sleek, mechanical artwork. It’s surprising that a second illustration was drawn other than the jacket artwork, but what is even more interesting is that the second is being billed as an artist picture. What does that even mean? I’m guessing that it’s just a picture redjuice wanted to draw for the single on his own accord, maybe. Hopefully it’ll be used for a special limited edition add on, as the Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari single had an additional sticker with it. Furthermore, ryo wrote on the supercell member blog that there is more to the jacket illustration, and that the full version is even more stunning. Ideally the full, wider version will be released soon! I am also quite anxious to hear the demo tracks for the three new songs, and I’m personally happy that nagi is again providing the vocals for the single. Another notable thing is the curious, supposedly fantasy themed music video. I do hope that it will be more substantial than the “live action” Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari PV.

A really relaxing and immersive song that completely exudes the underwater theme. Even though it has a simple composition, it is not repetitive and has a lot of depth, using mainly the sound of faint piano and string instruments to add to the atmosphere. The composer, Nijihara Peperon, also adds some subtle underwater sound effects to further enhance the theme. Really good song!

Nijihara Peperon’s Comments:
(From blog)
This is a song that’s a bit different from all the other past peperonP songs. Please enjoy it.
Since this is composed of only two different melodies, the biggest focus was actually on the lyrics.
I think that in this world, the aquarium is the lowest tier of heaven, and the highest tier of hell.
It’d be a pleasure to be given the chance of feeling something like the sadness within the depths of beauty.

(From niconico)
Made a song that reflects the image of an aquarium.
A false sea. A “blue” that surpasses the unpleasant “blue”. What would I be thinking about if I were in this place…?
This is a song where the lyrics are of the most importance, and is about the only song in the album that was made in one go.

Image from the video for the song.

Description: A really relaxing and immersive song that completely exudes the underwater theme. The composition of the song is quite basic, with only two alternating lines of melody, but the arrangement is quite incredible, utilizing soft piano and strings in the background to give it a more mature and deep feel. Even though the same two melody keeps repeating, it doesn’t seem boring or repetitive at all. There seems to be at least 4 instruments playing at once (besides the vocals), which give it layers of depth, making it a great song to relisten to over and over since it’s hard to catch all the sounds used in the song on the first listen. Although there are deep, synthetic exhaling sound effects added in, it’s not at all jarring, and well enhances the underwater atmosphere. I especially enjoy the waterdrop sound effect. Lastly, the vocal tuning is very smooth and has the right tone (not too cutesy, slightly low-pitched), and although it may sound awkward at a few points, it’s well mixed, blending in quite well with the intrumentals.

Original Lyrics

everything will be dissolved, vanished, by the colour of aquamarine,
just like following the stars in the night sky.
It’s a heart like that of a dreaming child.

Being enveloped by a weightless grief,
the end simply continued its wait.
A primary blue similar to unclouded displeasure,
as being in slumber is more than beautiful.

At the bottom of the bottom of the aquarium,
pure water drops are falling, disappearing.
If you suddenly look up as if in awareness,
you would be able to see the melancholic, sorrowful sky.

In the aquarium, breaths are concealed.
Feelings of mystery freeze the passing of time.
Guilty consciences, even gentleness too,
imprisoned lives will return to the sea.

れるりり (rerulili) is a very new composer in the Vocaloid scene, but he is very well known for his first work, Itsumo yori Nakimushi na Sora, as it is high quality and is one of the best examples of Vocaloid vocal tuning done right. He composes many songs of varying genres and themes, and uses a lot of live instruments, instead of synthesized ones. He also sometimes does covers of his own songs, and is actually quite good at singing.

れるりり (rerulili) is a very new composer in the Vocaloid scene, with only three original songs posted on niconico, where the first one, いつもより泣き虫な空 (Itsumo yori Nakimushi na Sora/A Sky Who’s Being a Bigger Crybaby Than Usual), was posted in September 2009. However, his first song is of extremely high quality, and is one of the best examples of Vocaloid vocal tuning done right. rerulili is also known as 当社比P (ToushahiP/”Compared to this company’s older products”P) since in the description for NakiSora, he wrote that it was 「初音ミク至高のバラード（当社比）です。」/”This is a Hatsune Miku Surpreme Ballad (compared to this company’s older products)”. His videos are also sometimes tagged with 至高の人 (Shikou no Hito/The Surpreme Person) in reference to that line. rerulili resides in Tokyo, Japan, used to be the bassist for a band called LaBluzu (PV on Youtube), and mainly records songs with a live piano, guitar, and bass, and a synthesized drum. “rerulili” is his own romanization for his username.

rerulili’s quite versatile, as he tackles different genres with each song he produces. So far, he has forayed into making a ballad /Nande?), pop (朝が来て/Asa ga Kite), and many other genres are covered in the songs currently posted exclusively at Piapro. His work also has a pretty authentic sound when compared to other composers’ songs, and by that I mean that the intrumentals sound a little more natural and real, and this is mostly due to the fact that he actually uses real intruments, rather than synthesizing a whole “band” with midi like most one-man producers. (To be honest, though, the drums sounded pretty real to me, and I can’t usually tell the difference.) Most notable, however, is how he tunes the vocals for each Vocaloid. They all sound extremely natural and has little rigidity, if at all, and it’s this point that makes his work stand out the most, as he can even make the Kagamine twins sing naturally and flexibly, despite the fact that they are usually quite hard to properly tune. He seems to have a large repertoire of Vocaloid2 software, and has so far used all the ones from Crypton – Miku, Rin and Len, and Luka. In addition to letting Vocaloids sing his songs, he also does self covers where he quite skillfully sings them himself. I found his version of Asa ga Kite to be better than the original Miku version, and I hope that he does more covers of his own songs.

In addition to posting on niconico, he also posts new original songs quite frequently on Piapro, and he has more songs on there than on niconico, since he hopes to recruit artists to provide high quality artwork for all of his videos. He also starts project pages on Piapro enlisting help with drawing artwork and putting together videos for each of his songs. The ongoing one right now is for “JOY RIDE”.

Nem’s comments:
I composed this song as a homage to Tim Burton’s famous movie “Edward Scissorhands”, but the story in the song has nothing to do with the movie. I wanted to explain the growing mentality during boyhood instead. The scissors are a symbol of juvenile violence.

Description: A jazzy song with a very cool image of Miku with scissorhands. This is Nem’s first time using Miku for vocals (instead of the usual GUMI), and is his most Mylisted work to date. Good tuning and incredible lyrics and melody, but is a little tricky to sing along to due to the intro that you have to accurately count in. Oh, and the official English song title is The Scissors, while the Japanese title translates to “Scissorhands”.

Also, Nem’s comments in English above was actually provided by Nem himself…and was originally in English! It’s pretty incredible that somebody can be this amazing. Please take a look at his other works too! (Linked to a previous post on this blog)

Original Lyrics

Translation

Love me love me love me love me
Love me love me love me love me…is just something I want.

The snow stopping on these fingers can’t even melt.
If my heart too becomes steel, it means that someone, somewhere, laughed

As though the scenery on display has become distorted.

These hands, these hands, to those cheeks of your’s,
they just can’t even bear to touch them
But if that’s the case, if that’s the case, then what should I do
if I want to be able to protect that smile?
Love me love me love me love me
Love me love me love me love me…is just something I want.

But if I can’t do anything besides hurt you
Then to you, and to those abusive guys,
the best result would be to tear all of you to pieces with these hands.

That’s right. This is the reason I was born.

These hands, these hands, anyone would be scared of them.
The ones who ridiculed me no longer exist.
But even so, even after all that, God, why is it like this now?
I’ve noticed that…I’m all on my own.
I was fighting and fighting, and in only that smile
I believed. I was fighting, I fought, and yet…

＜Aren’t you afraid of me?＞
＜Would you stay by my side?＞
＜I see, I am…＞

Something gentle, radiant, and warm
could be felt through these hands.
More than anyone, more than anything, I was weak.
I won’t hurt anyone, anymore.

These hands, these hands, to those cheeks of your’s,
Even now, it feels like I could touch them.
Once again, once again, someday, if we could meet again!

Love you love you love you love you
Love you love you love you love you…I’m sure I could.

buzzG is a Vocaloid composer who is pretty new to the scene, with his first niconico submission being from July 31, 2009. His best known works are AGAINST, Flashback, 赤い雨 (Akai Ame/Red Rain) and name of memory. His most popular work so far is AGAINST, a GUMI song with a PV done by artist meola, with 2,900+ Mylists. buzzG resides in Tokyo, Japan, and made his first song within only one month of learning how to use midi and Vocaloid.

buzzG composes mostly rock songs and occasionally ballads, and as a result his songs always have an electric guitar and bass playing significant parts. All his songs sound high quality since there’s a quite a lot of depth with all the intruments playing different parts at once, but is well arranged in that it doesn’t sound messy. The flow of his songs are usually relatively predictable, but don’t sound boring as there are enough twists, and the main melody isn’t repeated over and over. buzzG’s Vocaloid tuning is quite impeccable in that even his first work with Vocaloid is easy to listen to and don’t sound rigid and robotic. In AGAINST, his latest song, GUMI’s vocal tuning sounds so natural and well-done that a lot of commenters on niconico say that it sounds nearly human.

All in all, buzzG composes some consistently well-done songs with very good vocal tuning. Looking forward to hearing more works from him!

Composed by PowapowaP (aka Niou Tachi) with an illustration by tsurizao from Piapro and vocals by Hatsune Miku w/ an alternate Luka version.

This is a requiem with a peaceful electronic twist and simple atmosphere. Great song to loop while reading or doing homework. Vocal tuning is good, but the whole mood of the song is quite moving and is the most notable. I recommend the Luka version over the Miku version.

(From Piapro)
This is a bereavement song. Trying it out just this one time.
It’s a song with a feeling of suddenly remembering something you used to be afraid of.

Original Lyrics

Transliteration

Translation

While remembering that day,
it was piling up. That “Farewell”.
It was like falling from the sky above,
my sadness. I became alone.
If your “Farewell” could be heard,
it’d be a parting. From now on I’ll be alone.

A collage that fell apart, abandoned and scrapped.
Drops of water falling into a hand that can’t catch anything.

After sunshine is fog, sometimes rain, wind, and sunshine again.
It’s just like that.
It’s passed, these feelings
It’s like I’ve never remembered them.

“Was there meaning in all of the days I’ve lived?”
That was what you muttered that day.
Even though I don’t know, even though I want to know,
I still don’t understand.

Your eyes were spinning, becoming all white.
It can’t be helped, you muttered.
Even though you rose to the sky,
It looks like I’m still not fine with it.

I understood. I knew.
It can’t be helped, you muttered.
But it hurts because
You’d definitely feel the same.

(UMEMIYA Hina) is a relatively well-known niconico singer best known for her rendition of wowaka’s (Uraomote Lovers/Love & Lovers). Her titles always start with “人知れず”, which means “secretly”. (So the whole template title translates to something like “Tried to Sing in secret / Umemiya Hina”). As well, she gets other people on niconico to help her with mixing her songs. Also, Umemiya Hina is most likely not her real name.

Umemiya is capable of hitting extremely high notes without straining, wavering or straying from the note, and can sing in many different voices, though the usual one she uses is slightly cutesy but not at all annoying. Some of her “other voices” sound like Kagamine Len and even INOUE Marina. (See her rendition of Nanairo no NicoNico Douga). She also seems to have really good breath control since she can not only switch between voices quickly, but she can also keep singing a lot without gasping for breath (See her rendition of Uramote).

Original Lyrics

Translation

Forever repeating, a thing that is unable to stop
A loop that’ll repeat forever, no matter how many times, until we’re satisfied
Without any hesitation, the one that everyone chooses is loop
Naturally accepting everything the obscure loop has to offer
Unrepeatable things are all missing something
That’s why loopable things are the best gifts you can receive…

Always being close to me…
Always being right beside me…
I wonder where it came from…
Nobody, not even I, know.
A naturally flowing melody is engulfing me…

Unable to stop, or is someone forcing it to keep going?
In any case, that strange loop is something that doesn’t stop.
A loop for a special time is something that everyone has one of,
A loop that repeats entirely to your heart’s content.

A loop that keeps repeating forever in your heart
We don’t need anything beyond repetition until satisfaction!
Being something you can’t forget is a loop’s entire power
If I become attached, then I’ll get support from the loop
The thing everyone is wishing for, that single, only thing in the world
I’ll give you that one thing, I’ll give you my important loop…

Just once, listen to my loop just once.
Your special loop too, is what I want to hear.
If you listen to it from the beginning to the end, you won’t be able to stop…

Even if you hear it just once, you won’t be able to stop the loop
It’s not just me, it’ll be a loop no matter who hears it
A loop will produce a loop that the world hopes for.
Naturally flowing, that’s what a true loop should be like.

Not a new song, just a very good song in terms of high loopability and coolness of theme.

This post consists of three parts:
1. Original lyrics
2. Transliteration
3. Translation
4. Singable Translation (For vostok2+, by つてと (ikuy398) from this video)

Atsuzou-kun’s Comment: Finished my 3rd song! Take a look at the power of the unemployed. The song this time should give off a feel of bossa, lounge, cafe, or something like that? Even though I’m not really one for stylish places like those…The characters this time include the Vostok 1, some space dogs named Belka and Strelka, and a human named Yuri Gagarin. It was from the 60′s when the dreams and sciences for getting to space really took off. Space, the future, and science fiction have always been the dreams of a young man after all. Anyways, I’ll get to preparing my next song now.

Description: A relaxing song of the Bossa nova genre about the USSR’s space frenzy during the 60′s. Atsuzou-kun made a remix called vostok2+ that sounds more pop-ish and wintry about a month and a bit after posting VOSTOK. Both songs have the same lyrics.

Original Lyrics

帰っておいで　U.S.S.R.

Translation

Belka and Strelka both came back,
so don’t worry so much, just get out there and come back!
I’ll send you off from the starry road.
Your mission is to
go out into the sky

Yuri, all the things you’ve seen,
tell me about them! I really look forward to hearing about it!
Yuri, that blue star you saw out there
is waiting for you. Come back to the U.S.S.R.!

It’s lonely being all by yourself out there in space, but
when you look out the window on the right, you can see everyone!
Sparkling underneath your feet are
the lights from the streets.
Take a look…

Yuri, all the things you’ve seen,
tell me about them! I really look forward to hearing about it!
Yuri, that blue star you saw out there
is waiting for you. Come back to the U.S.S.R.!

Come back to the U.S.S.R.!

*Yuri, everything that you have seen beyond the sky
Tell them to us, we are hoping so much for
Yuri, the blue planet that you have seen
Is waiting for you! Come back to the U.S.S.R.*

Belka and Strelka have come back to the ground
So, you can do a take off without worry
Your mission which sent to you from the starlit world is
For the sky…

Repeat x 1

You’re lonely in the space left alone, but
Look at the outside from the right window
It’s the town’s light which is shining far away under your feet
Look at them…

Repeat x 1

Tell them to us, we are hoping so much for
Yuri, the blue planet that you have seen
Is waiting for you! Come back to the U.S.S.R.

Come back to the U.S.S.R.
